Zithromax or generically known as Azithromycin is a derivate of erythromycin and a subclass of macrolide antibiotics. It is considered to be one of the most widely used antibiotics worldwide. Zithromax is used to prevent and treat certain bacterial infections and lately primarily administered to prevent bacterial infections in immune compromised patients and infants. It is developed and marketed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer in the United States.

Zithromax may be administered orally in 250 mg and 500 mg tablets. For pneumonia, pharyngitis, and tonsillitis it is recommended to give 500 mg as a single dose on the first day continued with 250 mg once daily on the second and fifth day.

Zithromax’s mechanism of action basically inhibits bacterial growth by obstructing with its protein synthesis. It inhibits the translation of mRNA by binding to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome.

It is quite effective against specific gram negative bacteria especially Haemophilus influenza, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia, Neisseria gonorrrhoeae, Helicobacter pylori, and Salmonella Typhi. These bacteria may cause tonsillitis, middle ear infection, laryngitis, throat infections, pneumonia and bronchitis. If combined with quinine or artesunate, Zithromax has been documented to be a quite effective treatment for malaria.

Gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and vomiting are known to be the most usual adverse effects of Zithromax. Several quite rare adverse effects include allergic reactions, dermatologic reactions, nervousness, and even fatalities.

It is important to keep in mind that patients that suffer from allergic reactions to Zithromax may experience bloody stools four to ten days after intake. If the treatment in immediately halted, these allergies are usually not severe and life threatening. It is vital to warn patients not to use aluminum and magnesium – containing antacids and Zithromax at the same time.

Contraindications for Zithromax treatment include patients with known allergies or hypersensitivity to any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic including azithromycin and erythromycin.
